Director of the Facility
Professor, Ocean Sciences
Associate Dean for Infrastructure
Dr. Brian K. Haus is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Ocean Sciences at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, and he also serves as Associate Dean of Infrastructure. He earned his B.S. (1987), M.S.E. (1989), and Ph.D. (1992) from the University of Michigan.
His research focuses on experimental and observational studies of coastal and ocean processes, with particular emphasis on coastal ocean surface currents and their application to oil spill transport prediction and response (including CARTHE). He also works in radar remote sensing of oceanographic processes using satellite observations in collaboration with CSTARS and coastal radar systems, along with studies of shelf and inlet dynamics and wave–current interactions.
A central component of Dr. Haus’s work is the use of controlled laboratory experiments to isolate key physics and generate benchmark measurements. In the SUSTAIN Laboratory, he leads studies of air–sea interactions in extreme winds, wave dynamics, turbulence, and coastal structure design, while guiding collaborations that connect laboratory results to real-world coastal resilience challenges and improved forecasting and modeling capabilities.
